The present Hotel Amangalla has a colourful history. The building first was the headquarters for the Dutch governor and later was a barrack for British soldiers before it eventually was turned into the New Oriental Hotel. The Hotel Amangalla was completely renovated in 2005 and a lot of detail was paid to retaining the colonial flair and establishing high quality luxury. The swimming pool (21×10.5 metres) is in the middle of the garden area and has a terrace with loungers, a bar and changing cabins.
In the "Libery" with a comfortable terrace there is a selection of books, magazines, board games and Audio-CDs.

Bedroom: (about 36-39 m²); All rooms are furnished in a modest but elegant colonial style and have parquet flooring, king-size canopy bed, desk, dining table, telephone, mini-bar, safe and air conditioning. The bathroom has a detached bathtub, separate shower, toilet and hair dryer. The rooms are all on the ground floor with view on the garden or on the ancient grotto Kerk.
Chamber: (about 55-67 m²); same features and services as “Bedroom”. The rooms are more spacious and have an additional separate lounge. Some rooms are situated in the street wing facing the rampart and some in the garden wing towards the garden.
Suite: (about 60-80 m²): same features and services as "Bedroom". Additionally with separate bedroom and lounge as well as a more spacious and luxurious features; with view of the fort and the harbour or towards the tropical garden.
The Garden House: (about 140 m²): The two-storied building is located amidst the garden of the resort and offers a private terrace balcony. It has a comfortable furnished living room with a coffee table. A double door leads to the bedroom with king-size canopy bed, desk and dressing room. The bright bathroom faces the garden pool area and mainly has a detached bath tub, separate shower and lavatory. A staircase leads to the upstairs living area with an additional bed couch.

There are two restaurants. The Zaal, which was the former reception hall, serves morning light snacks and in the afternoon tea. "The Veranda" is the ideal place to have a drink to escape the heat. "The Dining Room" is an elegant restaurant that offers traditional curry dishes. Here breakfast and lunch is served for guests.

There is a passport and visa obligation for German citizens in Sri Lanka. Since 01.01.2012 Germans have to pay 30 US $ for a visa. This is to be applied for in advance as an "Electronic Travel Authorization“ (ETA) online via www.eta.gov.lk. It is also possible to apply for it at a Sri Lankan consulate or German tour operator. For a surcharge the visa is also issued at the airport.
