Dubai – Opening of Burj Dubai

Burj Chalifa in Downtown Dubai

The Burj Dubai was ceremoniously opened on the 4th of January by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Raschid Al Maktum to the public – fittingly to his inauguration four years ago.
The ceremony started with a surprise: In honour of Abu Dhabi the skyscraper was renamed Burj Chalifa after the ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Chalifa Bin Sajid al-Nahajan. The neighbouring Emirate provided financial assistance to Dubai which amounted to several billion Dollars.
The Burj Chalifa is officially the highest skyscraper in the world with 828 metres. Around 6000 international guests were invited to the gala. The jubilant audience were offered a great spectacle: A massive portrait of Sheikh Chalifa was projected onto a wall and an impressive light and firework choreography lightened the skies over Dubai in an array of colours.

The Burj Chalifa is located in downtown Dubai and in front of it there is the Burj Dubai Lake which is the largest fountain on the globe. Nearly 1.000 different water impressions with heights up to 150 metres can be generated. This show was one of the highlights of the opening gala.

It is planned that the first tenants will move into Burj Chalifa at the beginning of February. According to Emaar Properties around 90 percent of the office spaces and apartments have been sold and the building costs amounted to 1,5 billion Dollars (970 million Euros).
