Dubai – Luxury-Metro of the 21st century
On the 9th of September 2009 the first part of the Dubai Metro also known as the „Red Line“ has opened. It is the fourth underground railway in the Middle East: After Haifa, Cairo and Teheran Dubai typically surpasses all existing metro networks.
The totally driverless operated system heralds a new era in mobility. The objective is to drastically reduce the burden on the environment and the road network. After the first operating week numerous people have decided to use the metro instead of the bus, taxi or their vehicle. It is the most environmentally friendly form of transport of the city as it is solely powered by electricity.
Following routes are planned:
Red Line: The 52,1 kilometre long route will run between the Dschabal Ali Harbour and the district Raschidiyya, 29 stations are planned from which ten have currently been opened. 4,7 kilometres of the network is underground with the Dubai Creek being passed under. In Deira (Union Square) the largest underground metro trains station of the world can found which is spread out over three floors. There are plans to extend the route to the border of the Emirate Abu Dhabi as they are also intending to set up a similar metro system.
Green Line: The 23,9 kilometre route connects al-Qusais and al-Dschaddaf. The train is going to serve 18 stations from which 6 will be underground. The network will begin operations in June 2010.
