Andalusia - Volvo World Match Play Championship in Finca Cortesín Golf Club
The traditional golf tournament the World Match Play Championship is taking place again after a one year break. With the new sponsor Volvo the tournament is going to be staged from the 29th of October to 1st of November 2009 at Finca Cortesín Golf Club.
The world elite of golfing will assemble here: Paul Casey, Retief Goosen, Camilo Villegasand Robert Allenby have already confirmed their participation. All players must qualify in accordance to the set out criteria by Volvo.
The matches are carried out each over 36 holes: 18 holes in the morning and 18 holes in the afternoon. Should there be a tie then extra holes will be played until there is a winner. The tournament is spread out over four days with the final and semi final being played on Sunday. The latter is played off in Flight.
The competition was first carried out in 1964 and is regarded as the world championship of Match Play. This form of the game was the common form until stroke play was introduced.
The Finca Cortesin Golf Club (18 holes, Par 72) belongs to the luxurious Hotel Finca Cortesín. It is regarded as one of the best courses in Spain as well as being the longest in Europe (6.800 metres). The original character of the landscape was considered when the course was planned and has been perfectly integrated. The diverse vegetation with olive trees and cork oaks as well as lovely views towards the Mediterranean Sea all the way to the North African coast accompany the golfer on their round.
Volvo had to commit itself as a sponsor for at least three years – this to the delight of golf enthusiasts that on a short vacation are taking in the last autumn sun in Finca Cortesín.
